Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a learning disability that manifests primarily as a difficulty with written language, particularly with reading and spelling. It is separate and distinct from reading difficulties resulting from other causes, such as a non-neurological deficiency with vision or hearing, or from poor or inadequate reading instruction. Evidence also suggests that dyslexia results from differences in how the brain processes written and/or spoken language. Although dyslexia is thought to be the result of a neurological difference, it is not an intellectual disability. Dyslexia has been diagnosed in people of all levels of intelligence.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal manipulation or adjustment (World Federation of Chiropractic, 1999).
Chiropractors take an integrated and holistic approach to the health needs of their patients, considering physical, psychological and social factors. They provide care and support by reducing pain and disability and by restoring normal function to people with neuro-musculoskeletal disorders.

Davis

The Davis Dyslexia Correction method was created by Ron Davis who was considered retarded until his early teens but went on to be an engineer and artist. Later in life he developed the Davis Dyslexia Correction method that utilises mental exercises and visualisation to overcome dyslexia.

The Irlen Method

The Irlen Method involves the use of coloured overlays and Irlen Spectral Filters worn as glasses and contact lenses which have been shown to eliminate the effects of visual stress and visual fragmentation. This technology can improve reading fluency, comfort, comprehension, attention and concentration while reducing light sensitivity. This is not a method of reading instruction. It is a colour-based technology that filters out the offensive light waves, so the brain can accurately process visual information. Everyone’s brain is different and the key to success is determining the exact colour needed.

Coloured tinted lenses provided by others are not the same as Irlen Spectral Filters provided by the Irlen Method. Only certified Irlen Diagnosticians are trained to determine the specific frequencies to optimise performance from an almost limitless selection of filters.

The Irlen Method is a non-invasive, patented technology that uses colored overlays and filters to improve the brain’s ability to process visual information. It is the only method scientifically proven to successfully correct the processing problems associated with Irlen Syndrome.

Brain Gym

New brain research shows that the brain is plastic and brain wiring can be altered at any age. Neurologists have shown that physical movement actually changes the neural wiring in many areas of the brain. Brain Gym uses a combination of simple physical, visual and mental exercises which seem to operate by enabling the brain to more accurately interpret how it experiences the world through the senses, allowing new skills and abilities to develop. Everyone can benefit - those with learning difficulties and the gifted alike.

BodyMind Balancing

It was Australian Chiropractor and Acupuncturist, Dr. John Veltheim, who developed The Body Talk System or as we now refer to it - BodyMind Balancing - in 1995.
BodyMind Balancing is a new form of holistic care that looks towards the body to determine which parts of its healing system needs treatment, and what treatment is most appropriate.
The importance of this health care system is that it works to enhance the whole body-mind complex. Therefore, it is effective in healing all the physical and mental aspects of the body, as well as the emotional and spiritual aspects.
The procedure is safe and effective. A BodyMind Balancing practitioner follows a protocol in order to alert the mind of areas of miscommunication and imbalance in the body that need healing. Then, through a series of tapping, the body is encouraged to restore the lines of communication that have been damaged, and consequently heals itself naturally.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapists work with children and young people as well as their parents and families. They are able to treat a wide range of difficulties including problems with sleeping and bed-wetting to eating disorders, self-harm, depression and anxiety. Child and adolescent psychotherapists also play an important role supporting other professionals who work with children and young people, including teachers, social workers, youth workers and other mental health professionals. They do this through training, supervision and consultation. Child and adolescent psychotherapists offer positive long-term outcomes for the emotional wellbeing of children, young people and their families.

"You have helped us to understand that his behaviour is not about being provocative, it is because he is terrified. We have manage to find ways of understanding his fears and using story cards and pictures so that school is less of a scary place for him. We did not realise how much we would gain from having your insight into his feelings, his own little world."Headteacher talking about a five year old boy on the autistic spectrum
