ME and Fatigue

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is long-term tiredness (fatigue) that doesn’t go away with sleep or rest, and it affects your everyday life. CFS is also known as ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis). Myalgia is muscle pain, and encephalomyelitis is the inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. ME is a commonly used term, although it’s sometimes considered too specific to cover all the symptoms. GPs and medical professionals often use the term CFS to describe long-term tiredness because in the majority of cases the main symptom is chronic fatigue. Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is characterised by a range of neurological symptoms and signs, muscle pain with intense physical or mental exhaustion, relapses, and specific cognitive disabilities.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal manipulation or adjustment (World Federation of Chiropractic, 1999).
Chiropractors take an integrated and holistic approach to the health needs of their patients, considering physical, psychological and social factors. They provide care and support by reducing pain and disability and by restoring normal function to people with neuro-musculoskeletal disorders.

The Irlen Method

The Irlen Method involves the use of coloured overlays and Irlen Spectral Filters worn as glasses and contact lenses which have been shown to eliminate the effects of visual stress and visual fragmentation. This technology can improve reading fluency, comfort, comprehension, attention and concentration while reducing light sensitivity. This is not a method of reading instruction. It is a colour-based technology that filters out the offensive light waves, so the brain can accurately process visual information. Everyone’s brain is different and the key to success is determining the exact colour needed.

Coloured tinted lenses provided by others are not the same as Irlen Spectral Filters provided by the Irlen Method. Only certified Irlen Diagnosticians are trained to determine the specific frequencies to optimise performance from an almost limitless selection of filters.

The Irlen Method is a non-invasive, patented technology that uses colored overlays and filters to improve the brain’s ability to process visual information. It is the only method scientifically proven to successfully correct the processing problems associated with Irlen Syndrome.

CFS/ME can affect anyone, although it is twice as common in women than in men.
It is estimated that it affects about 1 in 300 people in the UK.
The commonest age it develops is early twenties to mid-forties. In children it is most common between 13 - 15, but it can develop even earlier.
