Specialising in:  The Irlen Method
The Irlen Method involves the use of coloured overlays and Irlen Spectral Filters worn as glasses and contact lenses which have been shown to eliminate the effects of visual stress and visual fragmentation. This technology can improve reading fluency, comfort, comprehension, attention and concentration while reducing light sensitivity. This is not a method of reading instruction. It is a colour-based technology that filters out the offensive light waves, so the brain can accurately process visual information. Everyone’s brain is different and the key to success is determining the exact colour needed. Coloured tinted lenses provided by others are not the same as Irlen Spectral Filters provided by the Irlen Method. Only certified Irlen Diagnosticians are trained to determine the specific frequencies to optimise performance from an almost limitless selection of filters. The Irlen Method is a non-invasive, patented technology that uses colored overlays and filters to improve the brain’s ability to process visual information. It is the only method scientifically proven to successfully correct the processing problems associated with Irlen Syndrome. This technology can improve reading fluency, comfort, comprehension, attention, and concentration while reducing light sensitivity. This is not a method of reading instruction. It is a color-based technology that filters out offensive light waves, so the brain can accurately process visual information. We help children and adults suffering from:
  • Reading and learning problems
  • Dyslexia
  • ADD/HD, Autism and Asperger Syndrome
  • Behavioral and emotional problems
  • Headaches, migraines, fatigue and other physical symptoms
  • Light Sensitivity/Photophobia
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI), whip lash, and concussions
  • Certain medical and visual conditions

My name is Joan Hillary. My background is Education. (Qualifications B.A., Adv. Dip. Ed., EAID) I am a certificated Irlen practitioner who has twenty two years experience of working with people who have Irlen syndrome. Irlen syndrome is a visual perceptual difficulty, which is not detected by standard visual tests. Visual perception is the ability to interpret or give meaning to what is seen. Difficulties with visual processing affect the way visual information is interpreted or processed by the brain. Academic and work performance, behaviour, attention, concentration and the ability to sit still may all be affected. Problems often occur under conditions of glare, fluorescent or other bright lighting, high contrast, black/white contrast, smaller print size and long periods of work or study. The Irlen Method is a unique technique which uses coloured overlays and precision spectral filters, worn as glasses, to reduce or eliminate visual perceptual difficulties and light sensitivity. A detailed diagnostic assessment is necessary to determine the most beneficial filter colour from an almost limitless number of colour combinations. The Irlen Method does not replace the need for instruction or remediation, but removes a barrier to learning and alleviates strain, fatigue, tension, stress and discomfort.
